Pope Francis has had a new
bronchospasm crisis as he battles pneumonia in a Rome hospital
and his prognosis remains guarded, the Vatican said Friday.
"The Pope in the early afternoon today, after a morning spent
alternating respiratory physiotherapy with prayer in the chapel,
presented an isolated bronchospasm crisis which, however,
determined an episode of vomiting with inhalation and a sudden
worsening of the respiratory condition," it said.
"The Pope was promptly bronchoaspirated and began non-invasive
mechanical ventilation, with a good response on gas exchange.
"The Pope remained alert and oriented at all times,
collaborating in the therapeutic maneuvers.
"The prognosis therefore remains reserved. This morning he
received the Eucharist", said the press office.
