Turin ex mayor Chiara Appendino was
reconvicted and again received a suspended sentence of about a
year and a half from an appeals court Monday over a stampede
among fans watching the 2017 Champions League final between
Juventus
and Real Madrid in Turin's central San Carlo square in which
three people died and at least 1,672 were injured.
The stampede on 3 June 2017 happened when panic spread in the
Piazza San Carlo after a robbery attempt.
Appendino, a senior member of the 5-Star Movement (M5S), had her
term trimmed from one year and six months to one year, five
months and 23 days. It is, again, suspended.
The same term was handed down to her former chef de cabinet,
Paolo Giordana.
Maurizio Montagnese, then president of the Turin tourism agency,
was acquitted.
