Celebrated South Korean Myung-Whun
Chung is the best choice that could have been made to become La
Scala's new musical director when Riccardo Chailly's contract
ends late next year, Superintendent Fortunato Ortombina told
ANSA Monday.
Chung is "the best choice that could have been made", Ortombina
underlined after the board of directors voted unanimously on his
proposal for the iconic Milanese opera house's first Asian
musical director.
Chung will be in office from January 1, 2027 to March 2030.
"I am not here for my personal tastes. I feel the duty to serve
La Scala in high-level projects" with the task of creating
"synthesis" between the souls of the theater and "this -
explained the superintendent - is the best synthesis that could
have been made. The agreement between the board of directors and
the theater on the designation leaves one speechless".
