NATO members will need to quickly
reach defence spending targets over 2% of GDP but each nation
must decide how and when to manage the target based on their
situation, Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone, Chair of the NATO
Military Committee, told ANSA on Saturday.
"Each nation of NATO will need to quickly reach defence spending
levels of over 2% of GDP because we have established that it's
not enough anymore", he said.
This will be obtained "with the timing and ways that each nation
will establish based on its situation, because nations remain
sovereign", added the admiral.
"It's useless to make grand announcements without taking
capitals into account.
"Apart from talking about growing numbers, which can be 3% or
5%, I believe that real and honest soul-searching is
subsequently necessary - that we must spend better and
together", he said.
