The consequences of the US
sanctions imposed on Serbian oil group Nis, which is
majority-owned by Russian energy giant Gazprom, were the focus
of a meeting today between Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic
and Russian ambassador to Belgrade Aleksandr Bocan-Kharcenko.
During the meeting, it was emphasised that consultations should
begin as soon as possible to examine the extremely serious
situation facing the Serbian oil group. As part of a new package
of sanctions against Russia's energy sector announced in recent
days, the Americans have requested that Russian interests be
completely removed from Nis, where Gazprom owns more than half
of the shares. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov also
addressed the issue today, calling for urgent talks with Serbia.
