"The economic dynamism and
geopolitical position of the Western Balkans are essential for
the stability and security of Europe," said today Franco Dal
Mas, Secretary General of the Central European Initiative (CEI),
speaking at the Senate's "Western Balkans and their path towards
Europe" conference.
Senator Tatjana Rojc organised the event, which was attended
by important political and institutional figures such as Borut
Pahor, former President of the Republic of Slovenia, and Giulio
Terzi di Sant'Agata, President of the Senate's European Policies
Committee.
"Investing in this region for Italy means not only
strengthening historical and cultural ties with the countries,
but also contributing to the continent's future of shared growth
and long-term peace. Therefore, the integration of the Western
Balkans into the EU should be of primary importance," Dal Mas
added. "We need to accelerate the Western Balkans' European
integration process. There is a real risk that a possible
failure, particularly in light of Russian aggression against
Ukraine, will not result in a Europe divided and drawn to the
sphere of influence of the Western Balkan autocracies," warned
Dal Mas.
