Italy's Jannik Sinner said Monday he
still has a way to go before being like his role model Swiss
tennis legend Roger Federer after his triumphant victory in the
Australian Open on Sunday.
"My model is Federer, but I still have a lot to do," said the
22-year-old from South Tyrol who made an extraordinary comeback
from two sets down to beat Russia's Daniil Medvedev 3-2 at
Melbourne Park, becoming the first Italian to win a Grand Slam
title in 48 years.
Enjoying the sunshine at the Royal Botanical Garden in
Melbourne, Sinner said "only now am I able to grasp what I
achieved".
The player denied thinking about equalling Novak Djokovic's
record ten Australian Open titles, saying "he's from another
league".
"I think I still have a lot to do," said Sinner.
"My role model has always been Federer, not only for his class
but also for the way he behaves: the important thing is to
surround yourself with the best people and face everything with
a smile," he concluded.
