International Olympic
Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach has expressed his
disappointment that Rome has withdrawn its bid to host the 2024
Olympics.
"There's no doubt that the Rome 2024 project would have
left a positive, sustainable legacy for the city and the Lazio
region," Bach wrote in a letter to Giovanni Malagò, the head of
the Italian Olympic Committee (CONI), sources said.
CONI formally withdrew the bid last week after new Rome
mayor Virginia Raggi, a member of the anti-establishment 5-Star
Movement (M5S), withdrew the city's support for it in September.
"The IOC would have contributed with an investment of
around $1.7 billion," Bach wrote.
"The decision was entirely political".
