Incoming premier Matteo Renzi on
Saturday phoned Italian Olympic Committee (CONI) chief Giovanni
Malagò to compliment the team that has won eight medals - two
silvers and six bronzes - at the Sochi Winter Games.
He congratulated short-track speed skater Arianna Fontana,
who was with Malagò, for her three medals - two bronzes and one
silver.
"When you come back, come and see me," said the Democratic
Party leader, who is set to be sworn in as premier at 11:30
(10:30 GMT).
Carolina Kostner won Italy's last medal in Sochi on
Thursday, placing third in the ladies' figure skating.
2012 world champion Kostner, 27, came third behind Russia's
Adelina Sotnikova, who won the gold, and defending champion Yuna
Kim of South Korea.
It was the first taste of Olympic success for Kostner, one
of Italy's most popular athletes, after five European titles and
several world medals.
She flopped at Turin in 2006, where she finished ninth
after going in as favourite, and placed 16th at Vancouver in
2010.
Italy won the bronze medal in the biathlon mixed relay on
Wednesday.
The Italian team of Dorothea Wierer, Karin Oberhofer,
Dominik Windish and Lukas Hofer came behind gold medallists
Norway and the Czech Republic.
Earlier in the Games, Fontana won two individual medals,
bronze in the 1,500-metres and silver in the 500m, and helped
Italy come third in the 3,000m relay event.
Italian skier Christof Innerhofer won two more medals:
silver in the men's downhill and bronze in the super combined.
Veteran luge star Armin Zoeggeler's bronze was the other
medal Italy won in Sochi.
