Greetings poured in for President
Sergio Mattarella on his 82nd birthday on Sunday, with Premier
Giorgia Meloni, Italy's two parliamentary speakers, political
leaders and regional governors among the many people in Italy
wishing him well.
"He represents an important point of reference for citizens and
institutions. To him my esteem and gratitude," said Senate
Speaker Ignazio La Russa.
"Happy Birthday, President Mattarella. Your commitment, your
proximity and your rigour in defending and preserving the
Constitution, the Institutions and the Republic are of daily
help to us in our work," tweeted Defence Minister Guido
Crosetto.
"Best wishes also from all the Armed Forces placed under your
leadership," he added.
"Happy birthday to the President of the Republic Sergio
Mattarella, a firm reference point for all Italians. Over the
years, his wisdom and his ability to interpret national
sentiment have been fundamental for our country," tweeted
Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi.
"The most affectionate birthday wishes to President Mattarella
and gratitude for his constant action to protect and safeguard
the Constitution and its values, pillars of the Republic and of
Italian democracy," tweeted centre-left Democratic Party (Pd)
lawmaker and former Turin mayor and government minister Piero
Fassino.
Premier Giorgia Meloni telephoned Mattarella to wish him a happy
birthday in person.
