Newly appointed extraordinary
commissioner for the reconstruction of Emilia-Romagna Francesco
Paolo Figliuolo has no time to lose in compensating households
and businesses affected by the flood and landslide emergency and
making the territory safe again, said regional governor Stefano
Bonaccini after the army general's nomination during a cabinet
meeting late on Tuesday.
"It remains to be understood what tools and resources the new
commissioner will have at his disposal starting from tomorrow
morning, because it is clear that there is not a minute to lose
to make up for the time that has passed," said Bonaccini of the
centre-left Democratic Party (Pd), who many considered to be the
strongest candidate for the role until the government decided to
opt for a technical rather than a political profile.
Potenza-born Figliuolo, 61, commander of the Inter-Forces Summit
Operations Command, served as extraordinary commissioner for the
Covid-19 emergency from March 2021 to March 2022.
"Over and above all other issues, there is only one goal on
which to work together and focus all efforts: to provide
immediate 100% compensation to the families and businesses
affected by the flooding, to make the territory safe again by
repairing river banks and roads, to get Romagna back on its
feet," said Bonaccini, after the cabinet approved a decree law
containing urgent provisions for reconstruction after the floods
that devastated Emilia Romagna and part of Marche and Tuscany in
the first half of May.
Later on Thursday Civil Protection Minister Nello Musumeci
announced during a press conference at Palazzo Chigi after the
cabinet meeting that Bonaccini and Tuscany and Marche regional
governors Eugenio Giani and Francesco Acquaroli will be General
Figliuolo's subcommissioners.
