UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon
said after meeting President Sergio Mattarella at the Quirinale
palace Thursday that "Italy cannot be left alone" in coping with
the migrant emergency in the Mediterranean. "Global solidarity
is needed to be able to address an unprecedented crisis," he
said. Ban thanked "the Italian people and government for saving
so many human beings" at sea. Italy has long been asking for
more help in facing the influx of thousands of desperate asylum
seekers making the dangerous crossing from North Africa.
