Italian Foreign Minister Paolo
Gentiloni on Wednesday hailed the United Nations Security
Council's nomination of former UN refugee agency chief Antonio
Guterres to be the next UN secretary-general.
"A great choice! Antonio Guterres will make the United
Nations stronger," Gentiloni tweeted after Guterres tweeted he
is "happy and honored".
The UN General Assembly will have to approve his nomination
to replace current UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon of South
Korea, whose second five-year term expires at the end of the
year.
Guterres, a former prime minister of Portugal and former
leader of the Socialist International, served as UN High
Commissioner for Refugees from 2005 to 2015.
