On the occasion of Canada's National Day of Mourning, which is celebrated together with the World Day for Occupational Health and Safety promoted by the International Labour Organisation (ILO), the Ambassador of Italy to Canada, Alessandro Cattaneo, took part in the official commemoration ceremony held in Ottawa today.
During the ceremony, the ambassador laid a wreath in memory of the many Italians who have lost their lives while working in Canada, paying tribute to their sacrifice and to the extraordinary contribution of Italian labour to the economic and social growth of the country throughout its history. The Italian participation in the ceremony was intended to underline the strong historical link between Italy and Canada and the importance of a universal commitment to safer and more dignified working conditions. On the same day, the Consul General of Italy in Toronto, Luca Zelioli, presided over the commemorative event organised by the Consulate General itself with the collaboration of Villa Charity and The Italian fallen workers memorial project committee.
