The National Research Council (CNR) has signed a cooperation framework agreement ('Memorandum of Understanding') with the Central American country's National Secretariat of Science, Technology and Innovation (Senacyt) in Panama.
The agreement will enable academic exchanges and joint projects in all scientific fields of mutual interest, with a focus on sustainability, biodiversity and technological development. Through specific agreements, the modalities of collaboration will be defined in detail in the future.
Panama is increasingly emerging as a hub for the Latin American region in the field of science and high technology, and there is already a collaboration in place with Italy, especially in the field of biotechnology and space technology.
The signing of the memorandum was attended by the president of the CNR, Maria Chiara Carrozza, and the national secretary of the Senacyt, Eduardo Ortega Barría, in the presence of the Italian ambassador to Panama, Fabrizio Nicoletti.
Carrozza emphasised that the agreement is intended to strengthen ties between the scientific communities of the two countries and address global challenges. Barría in turn highlighted in particular the efforts in the semiconductor sector and the economic and social spin-offs of scientific progress in strategic sectors, in which Panama aims to be a regional leader.
Ambassador Nicoletti also recalled the development of a high-level academic and research dialogue in recent years between Italy and Panama, and emphasised the importance of having, through the memorandum, a structured framework for bilateral scientific cooperation, in which new areas of collaboration could always find space.
