C'è ancora domani (There's Still
Tomorrow), the debut work by Roman comic and actress Paola
Cortellesi and a self-declared homage to great Roman actress
Anna Magnani, kicks off the 18th edition of the Rome Cinema
Festival Wednesday.
2023 is the 50th anniversary of Magnani's death and her face is
on the poster of the Rome fest.
Another film at the fest, Mi fanno male i capelli (My Hair
Hurts) by Roberta Torre, is a tribute to another great actress,
Monica Vitti, who is 'played' by Alba Rohrwacher.
Other highly anticipated films includ the debut work by actress
Margherita Buy, Volare (Flying), on her fear of flying; Cento
Domeniche (One Hundred Sundays), the fifth film by comic and
actor Antonio Albanese; Nuovo Olimpo by veteran Italo-Turkish
helmer Ferzan Ozpetek; An Ode To Naples by Sting's wife Trudie
Styler; The Boy and the Crane by Japanese anime master Hayao
Miyazaki; Cannes winner Anatomy of a Fall by Justine Triet;
Justin Glazer's The Zone of Interest; La Passion de Dodin
Bouffant by Trân Anh Hùng with Juliette Binoche and Benoît
Magimel (also a Cannes winner;, Firebrand by Karim Aïnouz with
Jude Law as Henry VIII and Alicia Vikander as Catherine Parr,
his sixth and last wife; La chimera by Alice Rohrwacher with
Josh O'Connor; and Orlando, ma biographie politique by Paul B.
Preciado (three awards in Berlin) which will bring to the red
carpet a transgender demonstration by various Italian
associations.
The TV series being presented include Mare Fuori 4 by Ivan
Silvestrini; I leoni di Sicilia by Paolo Genovese with Miriam
Leone and Michele Riondino; La Storia by Francesca Archibugi
from the novel by Elsa Morante with Jasmine Trinca and Elio
Germano; Suburræterna by Ciro D'Emilio, and Alessandro Tonda
with Giacomo Ferrara and Filippo Nigro.
There will also be a raft of documentaries including Mur,
actress Kasja Smutniak's debut on migration between Belarus and
Poland; Roma, santa e dannata, un viaggio nella notte romana by
Roberto D'Agostino ; the debut short by actress Giovanna
Mezzogiorno, Unfitting; and Enigma Rol by Anselma Dell'Olio.
There will also be a slate of music concerts including Negramaro
and Zucchero; a homage to Giorgio Gaber; the epic Bussola by
Sergio Bernardini; Fela Kuti (interpreted by Daniele Vicari);
and the rediscovery of Anita Pallenberg, model, actress, and
muse of Rolling Stones (Brian Jones and Keith Richards) and
later partner of artist Mario Schifano.
Lastly, there will be the encounters, starting with Isabella
Rossellini, who will get a career prize, and continuing with
Monica Bellucci and her her letters/memoirs to Maria Callas, and
finally the auteurs Gianfranco Rosi and Giuseppe Tornatore.
