Calls are rising on social media to
cancel Bruce Springsteen's Thursday night concert in Ravenna in
Emilia-Romagna after the deadly flooding that has hit the
northern region.
At least nine people have died in the latest floods, after two
perished in floods at the start of May, and there has been
widespread devastation.
Ravenna is not in the worst hit areas and so far the concert by
The Boss is scheduled to go ahead, but there have been rising
calls, even by some of the 50,000 fans expected to attend, for
it to be called off in solidarity with the victims.
A well-known Rai journalist, Tiziana Ferrario, tweeted: "I adore
#brucespringsteen but in view of the deaths and the towns
submerged in mud the Ferrara concert strikes the wrong note.
Time was we used to go to dig and help those submerged in the
mud, not to sing and dance carefree in the same zone.
#EmiliaRomagna".
Another Twitter user said that to hold the concert would be
"absurd and embarrassing. I understand all the reasons (for
going ahead), but the decision to confirm it is wrong".
Still another said: "Some 50,000 people will arrive in #ferrara
for the concert of #brucespringsteen...in a martyred region. I
ask myself with what spirit they will sing their hearts out
while a few km away people have lost
everything...#Idon'tundestand any more how things like this can
happen, why don't they put it off?".
