An "unconventional" Barber of Seville will debut at Rome's Baths of Caracalla on July 23, officials said Wednesday.
American director Lorenzo Mariani, in collaboration with Rome's Teatro dell'Opera, will present an innovative interpretation of Rossini's comedic opera, setting it in early 20th-century Hollywood instead of 17th-century Spain. "The world of musicals and silent film has a lot in common with Rossini in the perfection and in the beauty of its form. Although we are not conventional, we will not betray the essence of his work," Mariani promised.
Rome's recent inclement weather and orchestra strike did not deter Mariani, who had high praise for the production company.
"I know that times are hard, but I found nothing but collaboration and professionalism, and I worked in the best of conditions".
Italian choreographer Luciano Cannito was chosen to interpret the work of Rossini, whom Mariani called "a true revolutionary of his time".
The cast includes mezzo-soprano Annalisa Stroppa, tenor Renè Barbera and baritone Vito Priante, with Maestro Stefano Montanari leading the orchestra and chorus.
The Barber of Seville closes August 8.
