Province of Trento President Maurizio
Fugatti on Thursday signed a new order for a bear that attacked
and killed a runner in woods near the Alpine town of Caldes to
be put down, sources said Friday.
The 17-year-old female bear, tagged as JJ4, killed 26-year-old
Andrea Papi on April 5 while he was out running on Mount Peller.
An order Fugatti issued after Papi's death was suspended by a
local administrative court following an appeal by animal rights
groups.
These groups have said they will challenge the new order too.
Papi was the first Italian to be killed by a bear in modern
times.
The bear has been captured and is being kept in an enclosed
area.
