A pair of Italian men were sentenced to three years in jail by the supreme Court of Cassation Thursday night for causing the death of a 23-year-old Italian student, Martina Rossi, who fell from a balcony in Palma de Majorca after fleeing a rape attempt on August 3, 2011.
Alessandro Albertoni and Luca Vanneschi, from Arezzo, were convicted of attempted gang rape in a third and final appeals trial.
They originally got six years at a first-instance trial but were cleared at a first appeal in 2020 before being convicted again at a second appeals trial in Florence in March.
They lawyers said they would now appeal to the European court.
Rossi's father said after the Cassation verdict was read out: "Never again can there be impunity for violence against women".
