Rome's Sistina theatre is set to put
on a musical to mark the anniversary of the canonisation of Pope
John Paul II as part of celebrations for the Catholic Church's
Jubilee holy year.
The two-act musical, entitled "Man between men. What is
holiness if not a yes," will be performed on April 25 and 26 at
the theatre in central Rome.
Its director Sabrina Moranti describes it as an evocative
rather than a narrative portrayal of the charismatic Polish
pontiff. The figure of John Paul II is not played by any actor,
but remembered through stories and experiences of everyday
people.
Humanity is represented by a group of youths, who, inspired
by the pope's teachings, attempt an existential rebirth
accepting their own history while remaining hopeful for the
future. Meanwhile a character portraying evil tries to obstruct
their plans.
Moranti said she was aiming to show how holiness was not
something reserved for an elite but a universal call that goes
beyond religion and culture.
