Lorenzo Musetti downed reigning
champion Alexander Zverev 7-6 (7/1), 6-4 on Wednesday to set up
a showdown with Carlos Alcaraz in the semi-finals of the Italian
Open and keep alive home fans' hopes of an all-Italian final
between him and Jannik Sinner.
World number one Sinner will face Casper Ruud in the
quarter-finals later on Thursday.
Sinner, who is back in action in Rome after a three-month
suspension for a doping offence, will then take on the winner of
the match between Hubert Hurkacz and Tommy Paul in the last four
if he gets past Ruud.
Italy has not had a winner in the men's singles of the
tournament since Adriano Panatta triumphed in 1976.
