Foodstuffs that could theoretically be
used to get messages into the papal conclave like asparagus,
ravioli and whole chicken are off the menu at Casa Santa Marta
where the 133 cardinals who must pick the next pope are staying
during their daily sessions in the Sistine Chapel.
The centuries-old culinary precepts for the conclave lay down
frugal meals and very little wine for the cardinals, whose age
is usually quite high (this time 72).
Desserts are only served on Sundays, if the conclave takes place
on the day.
Cooks and serving staff take the same oath of secrecy as the
cardinal electors, on pain of excommunication.
