President Sergio Mattarella on
Saturday hailed the antibodies of democracy against sterile and
dangerous forms of nationalism, receiving an award in the
northeastern Italian city of Gorizia.
"It is to the citizens of these lands that we owe the success of
this journey: mature societies that grew up in democracy, with
effective antibodies against the enticements of sterile and
dangerous nationalisms that create grave damages", said the head
of State.
Mattarella said he was very happy to share the 25th edition of
the award Premio Santi Ilario e Taziano - Città di Gorizia with
the former president of Slovenia Borut Pahor, noting he had
experienced with him the commitment to promote a friendship
between their two countries, "an experience we not only shared
as a civic and institutional duty towards our respective
populations, but as a dutiful responsibility for the realization
of a future of peace for our continent".
"The dangerous alternative to this project, Italy, Slovenia,
Europe, experienced it in all its drama", stated the head of
State.
