Italy's ambassador to Paris, Emanuela
D'Alessandro, was received at the French foreign ministry last
Thursday after recent comments made by Deputy Premier and
Transport Minister Matteo Salvini on French President Emmanuel
Macron, French newspaper Le Figaro reported Saturday in a column
on political rumours, adding that the ambassador was allegedly
reminded by French officials that the Italian minister's words
"contradicted the Quirinale Treaty" between Italy and France.
The embassy confirmed "a meeting at the Quai d'Orsay", seat of
the foreign ministry in Paris, stressing however that the
ambassador had not been summoned by French officials.
Earlier this month, Salvini said there will never be an EU army
led by a "mad" French President Emmanuel Macron, amid French-led
moves to set up a European army and possibly send peacekeepers
to police a future Ukraine peace deal.
"The European army commanded by that madman Macron who talks
about nuclear war, no, never", said Salvini last week after the
French leader offered France's nuclear umbrella to protect the
Union against possible future Russian threats.
