A reported 113 murder victims in 2024
were women out of a total of 321 killings, down 6% on 2023,
according to a report presented on Friday in Rome by the Central
Criminal Police Department, the interforce unit of the
Department of Public Security.
In particular, 99 out of the 113 women were killed by a family
member or someone close to them, up 3%, including 61 who were
murdered by a partner or an ex, down 5% from the previous year,
according to the study "March 8 - International Women's Day".
The report was drafted by the police department's Criminal
Analysis Service, which examined a period from 2019 to 2024.
The survey highlighted that, despite a drop in femicides last
year, 35% of victims were women in 2023 and 2024, out of a total
of 341 murder victims in 2023 and 321 in 2024.
The study also showed the gradual and constant increase in the
number of femicides reported until 2022 and a progressive
decrease recorded over the past two years.
Moreover, it reported that in 2024 restraining orders issued by
police chiefs were up 94% compared to 2023 while protection
orders against domestic abusers were up 224%.
The survey in addition reported a 6% increase in sexual violence
cases lasy year in which 91% of the victims were women.
Stalking cases reported to the authorities were also up 4% over
the same period, as well as domestic abuse reports, up 11%,.
Women were the victims in 81% of cases both in 2023 and 2024.
