An ongoing ruling majority summit on
the government's planned justice reform to separate the career
paths of judges and prosecutors and other moves has shown that
the parties are "solid on the reforms," sources said Tuesday.
The intention - according to sources in the majority - would be
"to act united and avoid, with regard to the various measures,
rushing ahead on the issue of justice, trying to avoid a further
increase in tone on some topics".
Among the topics discussed were the definition of limits for the
use of Trojans in investigations and the 45-day limit for
wiretapping.
The chairs of the parliamentary justice committees and the
majority group leaders of the Lower House and Senate are present
at the summit.
Italian magistrates are strongly resisting the career paths
reform that would stop them switching between the roles of
judges and prosecutors, which they say is aimed at putting the
latter under executive control, a contention the government
firmly denies.
