Oscar winning actress Mira Sorvino
told the Los Angeles Italia film festival at the Italian
Institute of Culture in California Friday night that her dream
is to be Neapolitan like her father and actor Paul and her
grandfather Fortunato who lived in Naples' Vomero quarter.
"I want to be Italian, or rather Neapolitan, in homage to my
father Paul and my grandfather Fortunato Sorvino, who lived in
Vomero" she said while awarding singer and actor Francesco
Merola (son of Neapolitan great Mario) as part of the 20th Los
Angeles Italia festival.
Sorvino, 57, won her best supporting actress Oscar for Woody
Allen's Mighty Aphrodite in 1995 while her father Paul, who died
aged 83 in 2022, won critical plaudits for his portrayal of a
Mafia boss in Martin Scorsese's cult Goodfellas (1990).
The event was promoted with the support of the Italian Ministry
of Culture and Italy's biggest bank Intesa Sanpaolo in
collaboration with tourism agency Enit, Scabec, Adamantis Europe
LTD, Riflessi and Givova.
The evening began with the American preview of the film "The di
Opera-Arie per un eclissi" by Paolo Gep Cucco and Davide
Livermore, on the story of Orpheus and Eurydice.
This was followed by the delivery, by iconic Django actor Franco
Nero, of the 'LA Italia Marina Cicogna Award' to the iconic
artist and director Julian Schnabel, expected in 2025 with the
film "In the Name of Dante".
Another important award was that of the set decorator Cynthia
Sleiter, nominated for an Oscar (together with the set designer
Suzie Davis) for 'Conclave'.
The award was delivered to Sleiter by the producer Raffaella De
Laurentiis.
Edward Berger's work was proclaimed 'Film of the Year' in Los
Angeles, Italy in recent days.
The award was collected by the director himself together with
two of the leading actors, Ralph Fiennes and Sergio Castellitto.
Song of the year wen to 'The Journey' by Diane Warren.
Another 'LA, Italia Award' went to director Mauro Borrelli,
author of 'The Last Supper', the film that officially closed the
festival founded by Pascal Vicedomini and promoted by the Capri
Institute in the world, as has now become tradition in the week
preceding the Oscars.
