The rightwing League party on Sunday
filed a bill to ban the Islamic veil in public spaces in Italy
and set jail terms of up to two years for men forcing their
women to wear it.
The bill says it aims to end the possibility of wearing clothing
"suitable for hiding the face, as in the case of the burqa or
niqab" and this "not only for reasons of public order", but also
for a principle, constitutionally established, of "respect for
the dignity of women".
The proposed measure submitted by Igor Iezzi in the Lower House
also provides for the introduction of a new crime, that of
"forcing to hide the face" which can lead to up to two years in
prison and a fine of up to 30 thousand euros as well as
preclusion from applying for citizenship.
