A 20-year-old Bangledeshi man said
Saturday he will request asylum in Italy saying his life is at
risk from his family who want him to return to his home country
for an arranged marriage with his cousin.
The unnamed man, who has been living and working in Rome on a
nine-month visa that expires soon, has told a lawyer that he is
"sure" his family will try to kill him if he refuses to go
through with the marriage.
"I don't want an arranged marriage and I'm afraid that if I go
home I risk my life," he said.
The lawyer representing him, Angelica Lucarelli, said "it is
often women who are victims of the situation but in this case it
is a young man who has decided to oppose this custom".
The biggets recent case in Italy was an 18-year-old Pakistani
woman, Saman Abbas, murdered by her family for refusing an
arranged marriage in Pakistan.
