Rising star in Italian tennis Jannik Sinner, the Hamas-Israel war, the death of former premier and media mogul Silvio Berlusconi, the meaning of the term "national mourning", ChatGpt and actress and comedian Paola Cortellesi's box office hit 'C'è ancora domani' (There's still tomorrow) are among the top search queries used by Italians in 2023 according to a series of rankings complied by Google and published by the search engine on Monday.
The 22-year-old tennis talent from South Tyrol ranks first among living personalities appearing in Google searches, followed by Belgian centre forward Romelu Lukaku and the evergreen singer and pianist Peppino di Capri and then - in no particular order - Marta Fascina, Berlusconi's partner at the time of his death, centre-left Democratic Party (PD) Secretary Elly Schlein and Premier Giorgia Meloni's former partner Andrea Giambruno.
Of Italian celebrities that passed away in 2023, Italians searched for journalist and television presenter Maurizio Costanzo, Berlusconi, Sicilian Mafia superboss Matteo Messina Denaro, singer-songwriter Toto Cutugno, ex footballer and coach Gianluca Vialli, actor and director Francesco Nuti, writer Michela Murgia and actress Gina Lollobrigida.
The war in the Middle East, the Gaza Strip, Hamas and Kibbutzim are the terms that have led the 'why' and 'what is' searches in Italy along with the popular artificial intelligence software ChatGpt.
The terms "national mourning", "transgender", "Pope Emeritus" and "armocromia" (colour analysis) top the 'what does it mean?' ranking, along with Apayinye, a word that originated on TikTok and is used by youngsters to answer the question 'What"? The top films featuring in Google searches are Oppenheimer, Barbie and the blockbuster by Cortellesi, who is also on the list of the most searched-for actresses and actors along with Chiara Francini and Luisa Ranieri.
