Premier Giorgia Meloni has slammed a
well-known TV journalist for claiming that her rightwing
government is doing little to fight Italy's strong patriarchy
amid a spate of femicides with the premier posting a photo of
four female generations of her family and accusing the journo of
instrumentalising tragedies after the murder of Italian student
Giulia Cecchettin allegedly by her ex boyfriend.
In her highly rated prime-time show on La7, Lilli Gruber on
Monday night said during a discussion of Giulia's case and the
femicide emergency that "you can't deny that there is a strong
patriarchal culture in Italy and that this hard right in power
is not really fighting it".
Meloni in response on Tuesday posted a photo of herself, her
daughter, her single mother, and her grandmother to underline
that her family had not been composed of patriarchs but of
strong women.
She said: "I don't know how certain people can find the courage
to instrumentalise even the most horrible tragedies just to
attack the government.
"Now the fresh bizarre claim made by Lilli Gruber on her show
last night is that I'm an expression of a patriarchal culture.
As you can clearly see in this photo which shows no fewer than
four generations of 'patriarchal culture'.
"I'm really speechless."
Members of Meloni's rightwing Brothers of Italy (FdI) party
called Gruber's assertion "vulgar, ridiculous, and grotesque".
