The late David Sassoli was a
protagonist in the EU and defended the weakest, Premier Mario
Draghi told a House commemoration Tuesday for the European
Parliament president who died earlier in the day at 65.
"I want to remember Sassoli above all as a man at the service of
Europe, of the institutions, of its citizens," said the former
European central Bank president.
"As president of the European parliament, his rare capacity for
combining idealism and mediation made him a protagonist of one
of the most difficult periods in recent history.
"An attentive and authoritative voice, in defence of European
values and the rights of the weakest".
Draghi added: "In his speeches Sassoli outlined his Europe:
representative, effective, solidarity-based. It is in the
Parliament that Europe grows and strengthens itself".
