Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin "does not oppose the exhumation of Francisco Franco, if the competent authorities have decided this, but at no time said anything on the place of burial," Vatican Spokesman Greg Burke said Tuesday.
Burke spoke after Monday's meeting in the Vatican between Parolin and Spanish deputy premier Carmen Calvo who, voicing the government's opposition to his being buried in the cathedral of Almudena, proposed "exploring other alternatives".
According to Burke, Parolin said he believes that this latter solution would be "an appropriate solution".
This should be pursued in dialogue with the family, he said.
