The leaders of three small
leftist parties on Wednesday gave Senate Speaker Pietro Grasso a
document "marking the start of a common path which we would like
him to take part in." Progressive and Democratic Movement (MDP)
leader Roberto Speranza, Italian Left (SI) Nicola Fratoianni and
Possibile (Possible) leader Pippo Civati said "he received us
and listened to us, as he is doing with all the souls of a world
which has been in a great frenzy in these last few weeks". The
MDP, a splinter group from the ruling centre-left Democratic
Party, SI and Possibile are reportedly hoping former national
anti-mafia prosecutor Grasso will agree to become the leader of
a new alliance to the left of the PD. They are hoping to involve
former Milan Mayor Giuliano Pisapia's Progressive Field (CP)
too, though there has been tension between Pisapia and MDP
bigwigs.
