Italian Premier Matteo Renzi on
Thursday congratulated newly appointed United Nations
Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
Hailing Guterres' "charisma, leadership and profound sense
of humanity", Renzi said that "Italy will support you with
enthusiasm and conviction... in working... toward the common
objectives of peace, prosperity, and inclusion".
Renzi also expressed "gratitude and a very special thank
you" to outgoing UN chief Ban Ki-moon of South Korea for his
"generosity and courage". Ban's second five-year mandate expires
at the end of the year.
Guterres, a former prime minister of Portugal and former
leader of the Socialist International, served as UN High
Commissioner for Refugees from 2005 to 2015.
