Premier Matteo Renzi last night shared a table with French President François Hollande, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, International Olympic Committee (IOC) chief Thomas Bach, and Argentine President Mauricio Macri.
The leaders were at an IOC gala dinner.
Renzi and Hollande spoke at length about a three-way summit with German Chancellor Angela Merkel to be held August 22 on the Italian island of Ventotene, where the first manifesto of what was to become the European Union was written.
