Renato Brunetta, the House whip
for Silvio Berlusconi's centre-right Forza Italia (FI) party, on
Monday said the ex-premier would approve the government's bill
to change the Constitution on the condition that Renzi agrees to
the direct election of Senators and to changes in the Italicum
electoral reform to allow for majority coalitions.
"With direct election of the Senate and the coalitions,
Renzi will have Berlusconi's yes," said Brunetta.
FI, who this year withdrew its support for the reform that
was drafted in accordance with the Nazareno Pact that the
ex-premier struck with Renzi, last Friday presented more than
1,000 amendments to the bill.
The FI amendments include changes regarding the balance
between Lower House and Senate powers, and also demands to the
Senate to remain a directly elected assembly.
