Italian luger Armin Zoeggeler,
who won two Olympic gold models, one silver and three bronze,
announced Tuesday that he was retiring.
Zoeggeler, 40, made his Olympic debut in 1994 in
Lillehammer and since then won six medals in the same individual
competition in six consecutive Olympics.
He told a news conference that his instincts told him after
the Sochi Olympics, where he won bronze, that it was time to
retire, "but I wanted to be 100% sure that this was not dictated
by emotion".
Zoeggeler, known as the "cannibal" for his ability to
gobble up trophies, won Olympic gold in Salt Lake City in 2002
and Turin in 2006, and has also been crowned world champion six
times.
His final Olympic appearance came in Sochi, where he was
Italy's flag bearer in opening ceremonies.
