The scary recent seismic activity in
the Campi Flegrei volcanic caldera near Naples continued
overnight with a magnitude 3.9 earthquake that was followed by
two others of magnitude 3.
There was also a magnitude 3.9 quake on Sunday that could be
felt by residents in parts of Naples and the surrounding
province.
In total there have been over a dozen seismic events in the area
in the last three days and schools in the town of Pozzuoli,
which is close to the epicentre of the earthquakes, are closed
on Monday as a precautionary measure.
The Campi Flegrei area, also known the Phlegrean Fields in
English, is currently being affected by bradyseism, or ground
uplift, and there have been a series of earthquakes over the
last year.
Civil Protection Minister Nello Musumeci has appointed a special
commissioner for the Campi Flegrei area to take care of
risk-prevention measures.
The minister has complained about how urban development had been
allowed in the area.
