United States President Donald Trump's pre-announced tariffs on European goods are a big wake-up call for Europe which must now forge a "vaccine Europe" aimed at protecting industry and workers, industrial employers group Confindustria President Emanuele Orsini said Tuesday.
"For a country like ours that exports 626 billion, it is obvious that any type of tariff is a bad thing," Orsini said on the sidelines of a visit to the Enea alternative energy and Newcleo plants at the Brasimone Center in the Bologna Apennines.
"We know very well that, being the fourth country in 2024 as an exporter (to the US), with a surplus of over 100 billion, for us it is an important issue.
"It is an alarm that has been ringing for a while now but here it rings even louder towards Europe".
Orsini stressed: "Today, Europe must really wake up on these issues. We have a bureaucratic issue. We want 'the Europe of vaccines', that is, one that puts industry and its workers at the center. To do this, technological neutrality is needed. We respect all environments but we need to be able to work" because "as competitors we have the United States, China and India that do not respect the social standards that we respect".
