The longer Pope Francis's exposure to
respiratory attacks amid pneumonia goes on the worse his
condition will get, a lung expert told ANSA Tuesday.
"As always happens in these situations, the longer the acute
state goes on, the more the organism weakens further. We are
walking on a ridge", said Stefano Nardini, former president of
the Italian Society of Pneumology, who analysed what the path
could be for a patient who finds himself in conditions like the
Pope's after his latest two respiratory crises on Monday.
"Immobility and ventilation is debilitating for the respiratory
muscles - he explained - and the airways dry up, making it
difficult to expel mucus".
For this reason, it is then necessary to proceed with a
bronchoscopy that allows the aspirating of "the abundant
secretions" that were making it difficult for the Pope to
breathe.
