The United States has postponed
for an additional two months, until June 27, the entry into
force of sanctions announced last January by the outgoing
administration of Joe Biden against the Serbian oil company Nis
(Naftna Industrija Srbije), which would have been triggered as
of April 28. This was announced this morning by Serbian
President Aleksandar Vucic. This is the third postponement of
the announced U.S. sanctions against the Serbian oil group. In a
message posted on his Instagram profile, Vucic expressed great
satisfaction, thanking the U.S. authorities who granted the
request for a new postponement showing understanding towards
Belgrade. With the imposition of sanctions, the past U.S.
administration called for the complete exit of Russian interests
from the capital of Nis, which is more than 50 percent owned by
Russian energy giant Gazprom. Washington had noted that the
sanctions are not directed in any way against Serbia and its
people but against Russia, which holds part of its capital, the
proceeds of which help finance military aggression against
Ukraine.
