Polling stations in Germany to
renew the Bundestag, the federal parliament, opened at 8 a.m.,
and some 59.2 million Germans are called to the polls. Polling
stations will be open until 6 p.m. The country is divided into
299 constituencies. Over the past few years the number of MPs
had been increasing, so the election law was changed in 2023:
630 MPs will be elected. Each voter can cast two votes: the
first refers directly to a candidate from that constituency,
while the second refers to a blocked, party-defined list for
each of the 12 federated states and the three City-States. This
second vote represents the final percentage of seats the party
will have in the Bundestag. Only parties that achieve at least 5
percent of the vote or at least three direct mandates are
eligible for the apportionment. Twenty-nine parties are running
in the election.
