A new large anti-government
demonstration by students is taking place in Nis, Serbia's third
largest city in the country's south, today to mark four months
since the collapse of the external roof at the Novi Sad station
(north), which killed 15 people on November 1.
Despite the authorities' claims that they have accepted and
satisfied all of their requests, the students, backed by other
workers, are continuing the protest, which is increasingly
morphing into a political protest against the Serbian
leadership, which is accused of failing to combat widespread
corruption, poor democracy, and tight control over the media.
The mobilisation that receives tacit support from opposition
forces, despite the student movement's refusal to identify
itself with specific political forces.
