"Some continue to argue that we
should reopen the Russian gas and oil tap," but this would be a
historical mistake. And we will make sure that it does not
happen," said Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European
Commission, speaking to the plenary of the EU parliament in
Strasbourg following the presentation of the Brussels Roadmap to
eliminate Russian energy. Von der Leyen emphasised the need to
reduce Moscow's reliance on fossil fuels, which remain "a key
source of financing for the Russian war machine," noting that
"there is a clear majority of the European Parliament in favour
of this initiative" and that "the Polish presidency is also
committing to the bottom in this sense."
