New black smoke for the election
of the president of the new parliament in Kosovo. This election
is necessary in order to proceed in the constitutional post-vote
process and move on to the formation of the new government.
The stalemate has been going on for two weeks and is over the
candidate Albulena Haxhiu proposed for the presidency of the
Assembly by the Vetevendosje party, the political force of
Premier Albin Kurti that won the last elections. In polls held
every 48 hours Haxhiu, a former justice minister, fails to get
the minimum of 61 votes needed for election. Pristina's
parliament consists of 120 seats, 48 of which are the
prerogative of Vetevendosje. So far, Kurti has remained deaf to
requests from other political forces to propose another
candidate. A proposal by the majority party for a secret ballot
was also rejected in the courtroom today, regional media
reported. A new attempt to elect the speaker of parliament will
be held on May 3.
