Pope Francis and Palestinian National
Authority Abu Mazen had a telephone conversation on Thursday
afternoon, the Vatican press office told ANSA on Friday morning,
confirming Palestinian media reports on Thursday.
According to the Palestinian news agency Wafa, the phone call
concerned "the latest developments in Palestine, Gaza, the West
Bank and Jerusalem".
The pope also reportedly expressed sadness for the civilian
victims in the Israel-Hamas war sparked by the surprise Hamas
attack on Israel from Gaza on October 7.
For his part, the Palestinian leader allegedly thanked Pope
Francis for his efforts to consolidate peace in the region and
stressed the importance of the Vatican continuing to call for a
ceasefire.
The pope has repeatedly called for a ceasefire between Israel
and Hamas as well as humanitarian aid for the civilian
population in Gaza and the release of Israeli and foreign
hostages being held by the Islamist militant group.
