The United States wants Tunisia to
recover but it is up to Tunisian authorities whether they want
to agree to IMF-mandated reforms to secure a much-needed bailout
amid political and economic turmoil that risks pushing countless
migrants across the Med to Italy, Secretary of State Antony
Blinken said at a press conference with Antonio Tajani in
Washington Monday.
"We share Italy's concern about the economic situation in
Tunisia. And we appreciate the work of the delegation led by
Giorgia Meloni and the President of the European Commission
Ursula von der Leyen", said Blinken, referring to a mission to
Tunis that also included Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte Sunday.
"The decisions that are needed to get the funds from the IMF
are up to Tunis," he added. "We want Tunisia to recover, but the
government has to decide where to go," Blinken added, stressing
that "Italy and the US are working closely on the issue".
