Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio told Vatican Secretary for Relations with States Monsignor Paul Richard Gallagher Wednesday that Italy encouraged Pope Francis' efforts to promote peace in Ukraine.
"The initiatives by the Holy father in the last few days open an
important glimmer of hope to restore peace to Ukraine," the
foreign minister said.
"We greatly believe in the mediation that the Holy See can carry
forward to stop arms in Ukraine.
"We encourage talks between the parties: negotiations are
important to arrive at a ceasefire, which will be fundamental
for all kinds of humanitarian efforts".
Di Maio also said Italy and the Vatican were working together on
humanitarian corridors for refugees.
